A MassDOT maintenance foreman was hit by a vehicle and killed Saturday night while cleaning debris along Route 24 north in West Bridgewater.
The Plymouth County District Attorney’s office identified the victim Sunday as 57-year-old David Sousa, a Stoughton resident who, records show, has been working maintenance for MassDOT since 2010.
The driver has yet to be identified. Plymouth County District Attorney Tim Cruz said the driver did stay on the scene after the accident and complied with police. Details on the crash are still being investigated.
In a statement Sunday, MassDOT administrator Jonathan Gulliver said “We offer our deepest sympathies to the Sousa family and all who knew him.”
“He worked for MassDOT in the Highway Division and was dedicated to service, working for several districts offices as a foreman,” Gulliver continued. “He was also a former Select Board chair in the town of Stoughton. He will be missed dearly.”

Further information regarding the identity of the driver or if any charges had been pressed were not immediately available.
The accident happened Saturday night on Route 24 near Exit 28B around 9:30 p.m., and forced all northbound lanes to close for three hours as authorities cleared the scene and investigated.
There have been a series of major car accidents on Route 24 in West Bridgewater in recent months.
On Friday night, at least four people were injured in a three-car accident between Routes 106 and 123, according to the Brockton Fire Department. In May, a tractor trailer struck a disabled vehicle and crashed into a MassDOT sign on that highway, forcing all northbound and southbound lanes to close for the duration of the investigation.
